What types of latches do you stock?
The range covers 12 categories: antiluce latches, catch plates, door hold backs, drawer latches, fastener latches, miscellaneous latches, over centre latches, paddle latches, rotary latches, rubber hood latches, shoot bolts, and slam latches. With more than 130 products available in the range, you'll find a suitable option for most cabinet, toolbox, trailer, vehicle body, and equipment case applications.
What materials are available for your latches?
Our range includes 304 and 316 grade stainless steel, zinc-plated steel, and heavy-duty powder-coated options. Stainless steel is recommended for marine or coastal environments to prevent rust, while zinc-plated latches offer a cost-effective solution for internal or protected industrial applications. We also stock rubber hood latches for applications requiring a softer, vibration-dampening hold.
What is the difference between an over centre latch and a slam latch?
An over centre latch (also called an over centre fastener) is manually operated. You lift and push the bail over centre to lock or release it. It provides a firm, secure hold and is commonly used on lids, access panels, and enclosures where deliberate operation is preferred. A slam latch activates automatically when the door or lid is closed, releasing with a push or pull. Slam latches are better suited to applications where speed of access matters, such as toolboxes or vehicle body panels.
What are antiluce latches used for?
Antiluce latches are primarily used for truck and trailer tailgates, livestock crates, agricultural equipment, and any application where a sturdy, rattle-free fastener is needed. IRS stocks both 304 stainless steel (bolt-on M12) and zinc-plated thread bolt options.
Are there lockable options in the latch range?
Yes. Several latch types include padlocking versions, most common in the over centre fastener range. The anti-burst lock is also stocked for high-security applications. Rotary latches, paddle latches, and shoot bolts in the range also include lockable variants across different subcategories.
How do I choose the right latch for my project?
The choice depends on the load requirements and the space available for mounting. For heavy lids or structural panels, our large over-centre latches with adjustable draws are best. For smaller cabinets or flight cases, our spring-loaded or butterfly latches provide a secure hold without excessive bulk.
Are mounting fasteners included with the latches?
Due to the variety of mounting surfaces (metal, timber, or fibreglass), fasteners are generally sold separately. We recommend using stainless steel rivets or bolts to match the material of the latch to prevent corrosion and ensure a permanent, secure fit.
